Maio’s long, sandy beaches and its unspoiled natural environment make it an ideal nesting ground for sea turtles. During the summer months, through November, turtles come ashore to lay their eggs—an unforgettable sight for visitors.

Visit the salt mines Salina de Porto Inglês
The salt extraction area on Maio features a vast salt lake, approximately 3 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. Salt is still harvested here and exported to other Cape Verdean islands. The salt mines are run by local Cape Verdean women, and visitors can support their work by purchasing a bag of salt.
The bright white salt mounds create a striking contrast against the deep blue sea in the background, making it a truly picturesque location. The salt lake also attracts a variety of bird species, making it a great spot for birdwatching. Among others, you may spot the Cape Verdean kestrel and the Cape Verdean sparrow soaring overhead.
